Two Friends. One Rather Good Idea.

The independent makers worth finding — and the people who set out to find them.

How It Started. And Why?

Söstter began on a kitchen table, on a Sunday, with too many tabs open.

Between us, we'd spent years walking trade shows in places, pulling at things on tables, asking founders how they made what they made, and going home with carrier bags full of makers we couldn't get in Britain. The ones we showed people back home — Where did you find this? I've never heard of them.

That phrase was the whole problem. The most interesting independent makers in Europe weren't hidden — they just had no shopfront in the markets where the buyers lived. Anyone wanting to buy a hand-stitched leather satchel from a studio in Tartu, or organic candles from a Finnish forest, or ceramics from a single potter in Mallorca, had to find the brand themselves. One at a time. Often badly translated. Often with no shipping to the UK.

We thought: there should be one place for all of this.

Söstter is what came next.

What We Do. And Why?

We curate. 300+ independent makers, from across Britain, Europe and quietly excellent corners further afield. Every one individually chosen — for their craft, their values, the way they think about the work. Not the way they market it.

We also champion the boutiques behind the makers. Real shops with real doors — in Marylebone, in Devon, in Edinburgh, in Tallinn — places where many of our makers first found their audience. Söstter is online, but the makers we carry mostly aren't. They live in shopfronts. We just make them findable from elsewhere.

We don't carry mass-produced anything. We don't do fast fashion. We don't fill the catalogue to look bigger than we are. We'd rather have 300 makers we genuinely believe in than 3,000 we don't.

That's the whole pitch.

10 Years On.Who Are We?

Two friends, more than a decade in independent retail between us — building shops, launching makers, and (occasionally) having the right idea.
Söstter is the one we've spent longest getting right.

If you'd like to email us, we read everything. We answer most days, between coffee and dinner.

What's Next.Where Are We Heading?

More boutiques. More countries. More makers. More writing, in The Edit, about the people behind them.
We have ambitions of course — Söstter's whole point is the curation, and curation falls apart at scale. But there's plenty more to find, and we're only a few years in.

If a maker ever stops earning their place here, we'll stop carrying them. The catalogue is the editorial. We hold both to the same standard.
