White Rabbit was founded in 2014 by Melanie Blane, who had been diagnosed with psoriasis at university and made the inconvenient discovery — in the course of researching what to do about it — that skin absorbs a meaningful percentage of whatever you put on it, and that most mainstream skincare is full of synthetic ingredients you would not, given the choice, put inside your body. So she started making her own, in small batches, in a workshop in Ayrshire, using plant-based ingredients and the philosophy that skincare ought to function like skin food: fresh, minimally preserved, made to be used rather than stored away in a cupboard. The brand has been hand-making its range in Scotland for over a decade and has, somewhere along the way, been picked up by Harrods — which is the kind of provenance trajectory that tends to suggest the products do what they claim to do.

The range is built around the kinds of skin that don't get along with most skincare: sensitive, reactive, rosacea-prone, dry, hormonal-breakout. Cleansers, toners, day and night moisturisers, serums, clay masks, lip and eye treatments — vegan throughout, with no parabens, SLS, silicones, mineral oils, synthetic fragrances or colours, which is rather a lot of things to leave out and still produce something that works. Packaging is a deliberate mix of aluminium, glass, and bamboo — 94% of the range is now plastic-free — and the moisturiser jars come unglued so the inner aluminium can be separated from the outer bamboo for proper recycling. These are the small operational details that tend to indicate a brand thinking about the lifecycle of what it ships rather than the photograph of it.
