Indigo Prawn

Hand-Painted British Homewares, with Rather a Lot of Prawns on Them.

Right. Indigo Prawn is the work of Alex Kelley — a British artist (Cornwall and Worcestershire originally, Cambridge Arts Tutors and the City and Guilds of London Art School subsequently) who in 2011 moved to Singapore for her husband's work, was rather thoroughly bewitched by the vivid colours and unique light of the place, and started painting Asian symbols she kept seeing — lanterns, ginger jars, and the pineapples now considered properly iconic to the brand. She also paints prawns. Quite a lot of prawns. The brand name is, in fact, named after her enthusiasm for them. Alex has since moved back to the UK (currently based at Dove Cottage in Nailsworth, Gloucestershire), and now translates her Asia-meets-seaside aesthetic into a properly delightful range of British-made homewares, cards, and wrapping paper.

The catalogue is hand-painted in ink (with occasional linocut prints), then properly produced in the UK across a growing range of useful and characterful objects. Hero collections include Simply Prawn (the originals), Fresh Fish (everything fishy), Lobster Love, Hot Chillies (for the more spice-inclined kitchens), Pink Jellies, Pineapples, Lanterns, and Ginger Jars. Specific items include hand-painted tea towels (which were rather thrillingly spotted in the background of Channel 4's Junior Bake Off 2026 — a small but properly proud moment for the brand), aprons, lobster oven mitts, lid toppers, FSC-certified birchwood trays in Octopus and Pineapple designs (industrial-dishwasher proof, heat-resistant to 95°C, properly engineered for actual kitchen use), chopping boards with leather hanging loops, greeting cards, wrapping paper, signed limited-edition art prints, and the new zipped pouches with waterproof linings (for the beach, the swimming pool, or the cosmetics one would rather keep contained). Clean, simple, bright, and the antidote to anything beige.
